Mark Palmer, JD Co-Founder and Chairman
Mark is Chairman of the company and focuses on TJG business development. Prior to founding the company with his brother Matt, he was a partner in the law firm of Bricker & Eckler, LLP. Mark graduated with distinction from Ohio Northern University, attended the Wharton Graduate School of Finance and Commerce and received his law degree from Rutgers University. He serves as a trustee of Ohio Northern University where he chairs the Investment Committee. He is the current Vice Chair of Methodist Eldercare and its affiliates, Wesley Ridge, Wesley Glen, and Wesley Woods. He is also a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of The Columbus Foundation. Mark holds an appointment from Ohio Governor John Kasich on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation, where he chairs the Board’s Investment Committee, overseeing investment policy for in excess of $26 billion in BWC assets. He and his wife Laurie have two sons and reside in Bexley where they are members of Bexley United Methodist Church.
Matt Palmer, CAP® Co-Founder and CEO
Matt is CEO of the company and a client advisor. Prior to founding the company with his brother Mark, he was a principal of Professional Planning Consultants, Inc. and served as president of its investment advisory subsidiary, Portfolio Consultants, Inc. Earlier in his career Matt was a vice president of the Huntington Trust Company where he served as a member of both its investment and management committees. Matt is a summa cum laude graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and earned a Master’s degree from Harvard University. He is a former board chair of The Catholic Foundation and a former trustee of the Bexley Education Foundation and presently serves on the professional advisory committee of The Columbus Foundation. He and his wife Lisa have three daughters and reside in Bexley where they are members of St. Catharine Church.
R. Travis Upton, CFA, FRM, CAIA Chief Investment Officer
Travis chairs the firm’s Investment Committee and plays a key role in developing and communicating The Joseph Group’s investment strategy. Earlier in his career Travis served as an Institutional Portfolio Manager with Fifth Third Investment Advisors where he worked extensively with investment policy for endowment and pension funds. He also worked in institutional sales with the Harbor Fund mutual fund family. In addition to his investment duties, Travis is a Kaplan Licensed Faculty member for Kaplan Education's Leadership and Professional Development program where he teaches training programs for investment banks across the country and develops study materials for financial certification programs. He is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Toledo and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations. Travis is a member of CFA Institute and past-President of the Columbus CFA Society. Travis and his wife Shannon have three children and live in Hilliard where they are active at Cypress Church.
B. Scott Mizer, QKA® President
Scott serves as President of the company and Client Advisor. As President, Scott has broad responsibilities in all areas of practice management within the firm. In his role as Client Advisor, he uses his investment and retirement planning experience to tailor wealth plans for clients. He serves as a senior member of both the firm’s investment committee as well as the Retirement Plan Services Team. Prior to joining the firm, Scott established and operated Mizer Financial Services, an independent financial and investment advisory firm. He has more than 25 years of experience in the financial planning and investment management industries and earlier in his career was with the Huntington Trust Company and Nationwide. Scott is a graduate of Denison University where he majored in economics and computer science. He is a member of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) and holds the Qualified 401k Administrator (QKA) designation. Scott and his wife, Grace, live in Westerville, and they are ministry partners of New Life Church.
Todd D. Walter, CFP®, CPA Client Advisor and Director, Advisory Services
Todd advises firm clients regarding their portfolios and utilizes his extensive financial planning background to meet clients’ planning needs. Prior to joining The Joseph Group, he was a financial planner with Ronald Blue & Company in Indianapolis, where he served high net worth individuals implementing comprehensive financial plans and investment solutions. Todd’s career also includes time at Ernst & Young specializing in individual income taxation and a short stint as an auditor with a regional accounting firm. Todd is a 1998 graduate of Miami University, where he met his wife, Elise, who cares for their two young daughters. The family enjoys exploring the Columbus area in their free time. They are members of Scarlet City Church in Clintonville.
Dave Suchland, CRPC® Client Advisor
Dave utilizes his financial planning and investment experience to help clients understand and feel comfortable with their overall financial future. He’s a native of New Bremen, OH and a graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in economics. He started his career with Merrill Lynch in 1996 and since then has been a Vice President with JP Morgan Asset Management and Manning & Napier Advisors. Most recently Dave was an independent financial advisor where he focused on helping clients with investments, life insurance financial planning. Dave is a member of Financial Planning Association, a life member of the OSU Alumni Assoc.; he is involved with the Buckeye Boosters, OSU Quarterback Club, Sons of the American Legion and is a member of St. Mary Church in Delaware. He and his wife, Trish, live near Ostrander and have two children. Dave loves being outdoors, spending time with his family and coaching baseball.
Jake Martin, CFP® Support Advisor and Manager of Client Services
As one of the CFP certified client advisors on staff, Jake serves clients by assisting with all facets of their financial life including investment management, retirement planning, insurance analysis, and estate planning. Jake leads The Joseph Group’s Client Service Team and serves as a key member of the Advisor Team. Jake graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2008 with a degree in Business Administration. Prior to coming to The Joseph Group, Jake spent three years working at Chase Bank. He has also worked for Habitat for Humanity and spent a year teaching at a bilingual high school in Ecuador with his wife, Chris. In his free time, Jake enjoys running, cross-country skiing, cycling, reading, and attending church at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Grandview. Jake and his wife live in Clintonville with their daughter.
Aaron Filbeck, CFA, CAIA Investment Analyst
Aaron serves as an Investment Analyst on our firm’s Investment Committee, and is lead contact for our mutual fund company relationships. He is responsible for investment research and portfolio construction efforts, focusing on fund manager selection and individual security analysis. Aaron graduated with distinction from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Finance, where he served as President of the Financial Management Association (FMA) and Chief Investment Strategist of The Intrieri Family Student Managed Fund. Aaron holds the Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations. Aaron is very passionate about music and, in his free time, enjoys going to concerts and is an avid vinyl collector. Aaron and his wife, Andrea, live in Northwest Columbus.
Ben Borich Manager of Retirement Plan Services
Ben helps business owners and individuals with all aspects of their retirement plan needs by focusing on participant outcomes, investment guidance, and careful plan consultation. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Ben graduated from Cedarville University in 2003 with a degree in Finance. Prior to joining The Joseph Group, Ben worked at both Citigroup and U.S. Bank where his experience included client services, mutual and hedge fund administration, and management. Ben and his wife, Sarah, live in Bexley with their two daughters, Bennett and Blake. They love taking trips as well as exploring their adopted hometown of Columbus. They are active members of Fellowship Baptist Church in Dublin.
Rachael Cernus Client Concierge
Rachael oversees a wide range of activities at The Joseph Group including maintaining the firm’s client database, arranging meetings with current and prospective clients and assisting with other special projects for the Service Excellence Team. Rachael graduated from Pickerington High School in 1995 and then studied accounting and finance at Kent State and Columbus State Community College. She has had an extensive business career including roles as an executive assistant and auditor with Outsourcing Services, Inc. as well as the owner of her own stationery business for seven years, Aubrennen’s Invitations & Fine Stationery. Rachael, her husband TJ, and their two children, Aubrey and Brennen, live in Pickerington and attend Grace Fellowship Church.
Nick Boyden Client Service Representative
Nick works closely with the advisors to serve clients’ needs for on-boarding, opening new accounts, and existing account maintenance. He is also responsible for helping to evaluate and refine internal processes for a wide range of client service issues. Nick is a graduate of Ohio Dominican University where he majored in Theology and minored in Philosophy. His career started as a small business owner but shifted to finance, working for four years at Nationwide Financial as an Internal Retirement Specialist serving governmental retirement plan participants. Nick is pursuing his CFP designation. He and his wife Lindsay have two children, Joseph and Evelyn, and are active members of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Nick loves spending time with his family, camping, cooking, and playing golf.
Bridget Haggerty Investment Operations Associate
Bridget is primarily responsible for trading across the firm’s discretionary portfolios, including rebalancing and investing new accounts across all of our platforms and custodians. Additionally, she is a member of the Compliance Team, supporting operational initiatives, compiling firm metrics, and providing business reporting. Bridget graduated from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University with a double specialization in Corporate Finance and Investment Management. While at Ohio State, Bridget was actively involved in Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. In her free time, she loves traveling, spending time with her friends and family, and cheering on the Buckeyes.
