From Skid Row to Noted Composer: A Journey of Healing and Redemption

Ben Shirley was a talented musician on the rise in Los Angeles until alcohol and drugs destroyed his career and he found himself at The Midnight Mission homeless shelter in Skid Row, downtown Los Angeles. By God’s grace and having bought into a 12-step recovery program, Ben learned about the Skid Row Running Club, an innovative program at the Midnight Mission started by an L.A. judge. Ben’s miraculous recovery is featured in the acclaimed documentary, Skid Row Marathon, which follows Ben and three other runners as they compete in marathons around the world, fighting the pull of homelessness and addiction at every step.

Today, Ben lives in his wife’s hometown of Newark, Ohio, and is an accomplished concert composer, film composer, and orchestrator. His clarinet quintet, “High Sierra Sonata” is featured on the 2024 GRAMMY® Award nominated American Stories album.

Come and hear Ben’s story – one of faith, perseverance and hope. And bring a friend or two – it will be a special evening that you won’t want to miss.
