I had breakfast recently with long-time clients and great friends, Bill and Mike Hoy, owners of The Columbus Sign Company. The brothers recently “retired” from their family business, turning management over to Mike’s son Eric, who becomes a fourth-generation owner overseeing this fast-growing east side company.
Bill and Mike agreed to let me share more about their families and their plans as they look ahead. Perhaps their stories will inspire you!
Bill and Deb Hoy
Married 51 years, Bill and his wife Deb are the parents of three grown daughters and grandparents to seven. Oldest daughter Kathryn is a psychologist in private practice in the Cincinnati area where her husband Sean is a coach and science and engineering teacher at Archbishop Moeller High School. Middle daughter Jamie is a managing director at Cushman and Wakefield here in Columbus while husband Matt is a cardiac surgeon at OSU Medical Center. And youngest daughter Jenna owns and operates an equestrian center in the Cleveland area where her husband Rich is an executive health physician at the Cleveland Clinic.
With the girls married and living in three different cities, Bill and Deb do a lot of traveling up and down I-71 to spend quality time with each family. Meanwhile, they are engaged in their own great life pursuits. Deb has given up her long-time passion for owning and riding horses and turned to painting – portraits and landscapes in both oils and pencil. Bill has resumed his love of golf and stays in touch with a group of his Eastmoor High School friends, including an annual golf trip to North Carolina. A long-time board member at First Merchants Bank, Bill recently retired from that board to free up time for family. But he still stops in at Columbus Sign most days, just to lend a helping hand with financials and whatever advice might be needed. And they love to travel with a special fondness for the Ashville, NC area, where they have good friends.
Mike and Becky Hoy
Mike and his wife Becky have two grown sons and three granddaughters. Son David has been part of the family business over the years but is currently on disability for a health-related issues. Son Eric now manages the business with the help of his wife, Melissa. Becky helps out with the three granddaughters and both she and Mike enjoy spending time at their Hocking Hills home. Mike says he hopes to get down there even more now and recently purchased additional acreage that he is excited to work on. And he stays connected with a group of his Walnut Ridge High School buddies. Like Bill, Mike also comes into the office – in his case, to help with project design and even do some welding.
Mike and Becky celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier this year by taking a trip up to Gervasi Vineyard (near Akron) for a weekend getaway – joined by Bill and Deb and two other couples that were in their wedding! (Mike encourages all of you to check out Gervasi’s for your own getaway – gervasivineyard.com).
To Bill, Deb, Mike, and Becky – enjoy this next great chapter of your lives and thank you for the privilege of helping you chart the financial path that supports your great life stories! And to all of you, what do you want your great life to look like – now and in the future? And how can we help you with the financial plan and portfolio that enable you to live out that great life?
