The Joseph Group

Cool Off with a Patriotic Movie

July 3, 2025

To Inspire:

We’ve been talking about holiday traditions around the office this week. Most of The Joseph Group team couldn’t come up with what they consider “traditions” around this holiday, but most have plans to enjoy local parades and street fairs, spend time with family and friends, and see some fireworks.

For central Ohio, it looks to be another hot, sunny weekend. If you need a break from the heat, how about grabbing some inside family time with a movie that celebrates America? Here are five classics that celebrate our country’s origins and some of the people who sacrificed to make her great. (All are available on various streaming services for free or a small rental charge.) Maybe this could become one of your Fourth of July traditions!

Yankee Doodle Dandy

This 1942 movie depicts the life and career of George M. Cohan, proud patriot and composer. He composed the title song, “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and “Over There,” among many others—and was a giant in the world of late 19th- and early 20th-century entertainment. Cohan was a playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, and producer.

Sergeant York

Gary Cooper plays Alvin C. York, a devout Christian who applied for conscientious objector status during World War I. When that request was denied, he went on to become one of the most decorated soldiers in the First World War and a Medal of Honor recipient.

1776

This beloved 1972 musical humanizes the founding fathers, reminding us that they each had quirks and failings, but by bonding together and making sacrifices, they created a country like no other.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Jimmy Stewart plays Jefferson Smith, an idealistic, naive average guy who is selected to fill a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate. The powerful men behind him expect him to be a dupe they can control, but when Smith sees widespread corruption, he sets out to do battle, mounting a memorable filibuster. One of director Frank Capra’s greatest efforts, Mr. Smith shows the power to achieve change that a committed individual can possess.

Best Years of Our Lives

This classic 1946 film, directed by William Wyler, depicts the trials and travails of three World War II veterans, portrayed by Dana Andrews, Fredric March, and Harold Russell, as they return to their families and civilian life. It illustrates the demands we make on those who protect our freedoms and the challenges they face when the fighting has ended. This acclaimed motion picture won seven Academy Awards.

However you celebrate, take a few moments to remind yourself of all our precious freedoms, and have a great holiday weekend!
