Be a Mentor

July 11, 2025

To Inspire:

Through an organization called Young Catholic Professionals, I (along with some other older Catholic professionals) was recently asked to be a mentor. A young man named Ben was chosen as my mentee and we had our first meeting this morning.

I looked up the word mentor and was drawn to the definition: someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person; a mentor influences the personal and professional growth of a mentee.

I’m so excited to serve Ben in this way. In today’s meeting we simply got to know each other and as we were concluding I asked how I could best help him going forward. Having just moved to Columbus, he shared that he would like to get more connected into our local business community and having just been married, he shared that he would like me to help him achieve a better work-life balance. We agreed to meet once a month and I certainly will help him with both of those requests.

I suggested that we read a book and discuss it as part of our meeting time, and he loved that idea. Our first book will be The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. It’s a simple but very impactful story about the power of being a “giver” in every aspect of our life, including our business life.

What about you – can you be a mentor to someone in your life? You don’t need the title of mentor to be one – simply identify someone in your life who could use some direction and advice and begin spending some time with them. Serve them, give them your encouragement, your advice and your support. A monthly get together and/or regular texts or phone calls letting them know you’re thinking of them would be so impactful. This is a challenging world for all of us, but especially for young adults. You can make such a difference in the life of someone you know, and you’ll find great joy and satisfaction in doing so. Remember that when we give to others, we receive so much.

Let’s all be mentors – with or without the formal name. I’m confident we’ll be amazed at how much we help others live a great life – and how much it will help us live a great life as well.

Have a great weekend!!
