Playing It Cool
July 11, 2023
To Inspire:
Allisen Corpuz found herself on the biggest and most beautiful stage in women’s golf last weekend and made it look like a stroll on the beach. Never mind that she had never won on the LPGA Tour or that she had heard all week about the historic occasion of the U.S. Women’s Open being held at Pebble Beach for the first time. Nothing could make her crack. “Every few holes I kind of looked out and said, ‘I’m here at Pebble Beach. There’s not many places that are better than this.” Corpuz turned a tight duel with Nasa Hataoka into a runaway, closing with a 3-under 69 on Sunday for a three-shot victory to become the first American in 20 years to make the U.S. Women’s Open her first LPGA title.
Those that know Allisen were not surprised. LPGA Tour veteran and golf analyst Mary Bea Porter-King, also from Hawaii, shared that, “Allisen has always been calm and cool. She plods along with a certain quiet confidence and determination and today became a giant killer (taming the historic Pebble Beach course).”
Lisa and I (Matt) watched the final four holes and her performance reminded me that remaining cool and confident in stressful situations should be a goal for all of us. Life has so many big stage events in our lives related to important relationships, personal goals, work goals, etc. As we strive to live each day with purpose and intentionality, over time we build the necessary disciplines that ensure that we can face the big stage events of our lives with the same calmness and confidence that Allisen displayed at Pebble Beach last weekend.
Today, determine what “big events” are important to you – your life goals and plans. Get a clear picture in your mind of the kind of person do you want to become and identify the virtues, skills, and attitudes you need to become that person and to live out your own big stage events with calmness and confidence. By practicing those in the “little events” of each day you too will be prepared to be a giant killer.
Seek greatness in your life – you were made for it!!
