Serving Others
November 1, 2024
To Inspire:
Do you know the story of St. Phocas the Gardener? A Christian who lived on the coast of the Black Sea in the third century, Phocas had a desire to please God but had few skills or talents. But there was one thing he did well – very well in fact – and that was to grow vegetables. Phocas decided to offer that talent to God by cultivating a large garden just outside the city walls where he lived. Visitors coming to the city after a long day of travel found Phocas’ garden a place of respite and a place to get a good meal before entering the city. His reputation for kindness and hospitality became known throughout the town – he was a man of joy.
When we use our skills and talents – whether great or modest – to serve others we have the ability to change the lives of those around us. With elections right around the corner, perhaps we can use Phocas as a reminder that regardless of which candidate wins, we can live a life of joy by serving those around us. Focus on living each moment with joy and gratitude in service to others and try not to let the challenges of the world (or the election results) get you down. Mother Theresa said that “very few of us will do great things but all of us can do little things with great love.” Let’s keep our minds and lives focused on love – joy is sure to follow!
Have a good weekend.
