The Power of Sacrifice

April 17, 2025

To Inspire:

This Easter weekend, Christians all over the world will remember Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the joy of His resurrection.

It has me thinking about the power of sacrifice. Sacrificing for someone else is the highest form of love – willing the best of the other and giving of yourself to make that possible.

Sacrifice is intrinsic to our humanity. We were made to live with and for others – in our marriages and our families as well as in our greater community and even beyond.

But sacrifice is not easy. We also have a basic selfishness that we are born with. We must exercise our will and open our hearts to make sacrifices for others.

What can sacrifice look like? It will vary for each of us. Here are some examples to get you thinking:

  • One of my colleagues and his wife have recently committed to visiting his older parents a couple of weekends a month to help them with yard and house work. Sacrifice.
  • A friend and client of ours serves at a local prison two mornings a week leading a book club. Sacrifice.
  • A grandparent takes care of a grandchild 2-3 days a week. Sacrifice.
  • A couple volunteers at a homeless shelter two evenings a month. Sacrifice.
  • A retired man teaches part time at his synagogue. Sacrifice.

Sacrifice. The highest form of love. What can sacrifice look like for you?

And for all who celebrate Easter, have a wonderful weekend!
