What Do You Consume?

June 27, 2025

To Inspire:

Last night I attended a gala celebrating the 20th anniversary of our local Catholic radio station here in Columbus, Saint Gabriel Radio. There must have been 500 people in attendance – volunteers, donors, staff, and many who have found the station’s daily programming so uplifting.

It got me thinking about the power of radio, television, and social media for good or for ill and the daily choices we make with each of those mediums. As I’ve gotten older, I find myself avoiding programming that is disruptive to my peace of mind – shows that have excessive violence for example or podcasts or programs that emphasize the many political conflicts present in our society. Instead, when I’m in the car, in addition to Saint Gabriel Radio, I find myself listening to OSU Classical Music or music from the 70’s! And when Lisa and I do watch some television, we now gravitate show like The Voice or America’s Got Talent, or other shows that inspire rather than tear down. And while I largely stay off social media, if I am online, it might be to watch some kind of instructional video on YouTube or to learn more about someone who is doing inspiring things with their lives.

For me the result has been a greater sense of calm and less stress in my life. To each his own of course but perhaps do an audit of what you’re consuming in these different mediums and then assess your overall peace of mind and stress levels. Perhaps you’ll discover a correlation that will lead you to make some changes. As the adage goes, garbage in…garbage out…

Life is such a gift – let’s live it with joy and gratitude! Have a great weekend!
